The Dutch version of petite anglaise, published by Cargo, goes on sale today in The Netherlands and Belgium.
Leafing through my copy, I must say I like the way the translator has kept ‘Mr Frog’ and ‘Tadpole’ in English with a little explanatory note on the first page. The cover blurb appears to shave a year off my age (no bad thing for a lady) and, using the little German I can remember (not a great deal considering I studied the language, alongside French, to degree level), I was able to limp through a page or two before I lost patience.
If you speak Dutch and would like to get hold of a copy, it should be available in all good bookshops and can also be ordered online – morgen in huis – here.

This is very unfair – I tried to order the Dutch version of the book, but I couldn’t find Great Britain, or United Kingdom, or even England in the list of countries on the registration page. So falling at the first hurdle…
I then went to Amazon.de, in case they sold Dutch books, but they don’t. I did encounter a synopsis there; so who is this mysterious “James”?

Guess it doesn’t say the name of the books translator very prominently on thebook ;-). Having recently thought about learning Dutch think the title means one life,one love,one blog and can decipher that one commenter has a signed copy, and two wish PA much success. All of above is my rather long-winded way of asking if comments will be translated by some kind reader, or if Petite, as a linguist, could bear to add a computerised translator to the blog – I couldn’t.

Ik kan aan een betere manier denken niet om van uw boek te genieten dan met u in een warm bad van Advocat uit te glijden en aandachtig te luisteren terwijl u het hardop aan me leest die dramatische wapengebaren en volledige vocale waaier aanwendt. Dan kunt u het bescheiden, in bed, meer dan een glas van uw favoriete hete toddy ondertekenen. Wie zegt het Nederlands geen sexy taal is?

I have actually already read the English version (bought in Paris when they had some) and I loved it.
Since I’m Dutch, but living in Paris since 14 years, I would love to have the Dutch version as well.

Eigenlijk wil ik je boek helemaal niet in het Nederlands lezen, want ik lees niet graag vertalingen (tenzij ik de oorspronkelijke taal niet machtig ben natuurlijk). Maar ja, wie wil er nou géén getekend exemplaar ontvangen. Daarvoor ga ik zelfs voor het eerst hier eens wat schrijven, terwijl ik je blog al een paar jaar volg! De Engelse versie bestel ik dan toch ook nog wel hoor. Heel veel succes gewenst!

Maar ik vind alleen maar de vertaalde exemplaren in de winkels hier in België …

I thought to have the Dutchman type out a comment for me but I reckon that would be cheating. I will be snapping up the Dutch version in a couple of weeks and look forward to picking out the few words I know, like slagroom, slank, and my personal favorite, kikker which means frog. I like the way it sounds when you say it which is sort of Kaykah. Or maybe that is how it sounds with a Texas accent lol. I will never learn Dutch but I can read recipe books and find my way around the train and bus station so that is all I need. Do 3 words count as a comment? Probably not…
One other thing, is that Mar 20 the only signing you have arranged so far?

Ik zou een moord begaan om een gesigneerde kopie van je boek te krijgen!!
Via deze blog gluur ik al jaren mee in de gebeurtenissen van je leven, ik lach me dood met de geluidsfragmentjes over Tadpole’s zangkunsten (en inderdaad: soms kan je het snot écht wel horen) en uiteraard ben ik net als de andere trouwe lezers heel enthousiast over je nieuwe baan als schrijfster!
De helft van mijn familie woont in Parijs, ik heb er veel tijd doorgebracht in mijn jeugd, dus komt het mij allemaal ook heel herkenbaar over :-)
Niets zou zo utterly cool zijn dan je gesigneerd boek krijgen!!

Hey, I’ve only just started reading here and I think you write rather attractive. I saw the book in the Bruna today, in the town where I live, and it’s on the Valentine’s book standard here! Not that that means anything actually. So, I wasn’t sure to get it yet or not, bc I’ve only found out about your blog recently. Hopefully I’ll get your copy (which would be absolutely divine) and if not, I’ll just force myself to get it next week, after the whole Valentine’s Day rush. I truly do hate that commercial stuff, but it was cool to have spotted your book today (in Dutch however. I prefer reading in English)
Okey, en nu dan een stukje in het Nederlands. Ik weet niet helemaal zeker of je ook lappen Nederlands aan kan dus ik zal het kort houden. Ik kan alleen niks zo ontzettend origineels verzinnen, wat ook echt typisch Nederlands is. Afgezien van het weer dan, wat vandaag en gisteren al wel beter aan het worden is. Hoop dat het bij de Fransen een stuk aangenamer is, dan probeer ik het er hier maar het beste van te maken, op een terrasje met een biertje of cappucino in een klein Gelders stadje.

A little while ago I was very surprised to read the title “drunk, sexy and slim” only tot realise a fraction later that unexpectedly it was in my own language, and meant something completely different!
This time you didn’t fool me, though! :-)

I’m shocked. Shocked. Every Dutch person I ever met translated it as frog in your beak.
Oh well. I did meet a very grand lady once who told me in conversation
“I breed dogs”
except that she used the Dutch word for breed.
Of course, you can do anything in Holland, as long as you don’t do it in the bike lane.

Are you talking about the Dutch translation or the English version?
I tried to buy the book at American Book Shop in Amsterdam on Sunday (specially made the trip to buy just this book!) and it wasn’t available yet. Any idea when and where I can buy it in Amsterdam?

Vor 20 Minuten wußte ich nichts von der Geschichte, bin aber dann zufällig über deinen Artikel bei Times-online gestolpert und fande die Geschichte fazinierend! Ich habe auch noch nie im internet ‘mitgebloggt’! Ich bin übrigens auch keine Deutschin, wohne aber in Deutschland. Dachte ich bringe eine neue sprache ins Spiel(: Viel Erfolg mit deinem Buch! thanks for the reply Petite! I didn’t think to actually look at amazon.de – doh! It’s impressive that the translation rights have been sold to Germany as well. Do you know how many countries the rights have been sold to so far? (I work in publishing so it interests me).

I found my copy in the letterbox when I came home from work on friday. Totally ruined my schedule for saturday!! :-)
Read it in one go, and loved it. Even though I already knew the story, I could not put it away. Same story but a lot more perspective, or how do you say that? More ‘bien encadré’ in its context. A bit like reading a book after you’ve seen the movie :-)
Not having read the english version I cannot really comment on the translation, but it still very much had the ‘petite-feel’ to it. Seems to me they kept it pretty close to your original!
