Just a warning that I will be moving this humble abode from my money-grabbing, bandwidth-poor French host to a cuddly US operation named A Small Orange. If all goes well, you won’t even notice.
A relief? Oh yes, Amen to that.

Good luck. I moved webhost and it was a rough ride, but everything went fine afterwards. Right now you have a few images not appearing, I hope they come back :-)

i don’t like moving host, managing to pay the host as I have no CC I gotta go to the post office and transfer the money via western union, it all is complicated, have moved host for more than two times but luckily, my current host is good, a cheap one with lots of spaces and bandwidth and never have down time yet till now. What I like from changing host is to think like,’oh thanks, God. I found a new one! Let me out of here!’ hehe! Well, good luck with your host and site!

well, I don’t want to speak too soon, but you are already on the new site. So looks as though it was pretty smooth!

Dave – I can’t believe I actually spent the last year trying to use phpmyAdmin and such like in French, and dealing with such rude, unhelpful, unsupportive people. It is such a relief to have mailed off my letter and cut the ties with those people…
…and if I don’t get a full refund off them, those of you who read French will be able to see my (four page) letter of complaint here shortly!

Petite, …………..re your comment to ‘Dave of the Lake’ (what a wonderful nom de plume that is… it puts me in mind of Excalibor & the knights of the Round Table),
you reveal just a glimpse of all the backstage efforts required to ensure that your readership is kept entertained & informed. And you cope with this as well as doing the blog, coping with your job, caring for Tadpole, commuting from France to England at regular intervals, developing your new realationship and planning your move to Rennes…. plus, of course, the myriad of activities you quite rightly chooose not to tell us about! If I was a bit younger I would think that you must be pretty ‘cool’ to cope with all this. Since I am not (a bit younger) I can only say…. I’m full of admiration…. and I hope you don’t burn the candle at both ends so much that you do end up ‘burn-out’ altogether, ……… and do give yourself regular pats on the back for all that you manage to achieve. I just have this suspicion that people who are ‘on their own’ never get the amount of praise and appreciation they deserve! (except from Tadpole, of course!)

Actually I could do with an early night! I finished migrating the site at 1 am yesterday.
Ahem, anyone who wants to express their appreciation is welcome to click on the – “donate” link above the eye picture, via which you can make a direct contribution to my web hosting costs using paypal.
I now pay $10 per month, so even a very small contribution will make a difference…

I am flattered by the comment, though in my case it is probably closer to “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” than something like, say, Malory’s “Le Morte d’Arthur.
Petite, this new site does indeed load much faster.

And one of these days, when I get round to upgrading to wordpress 2.0.1, it will be even faster…
Comment by petite — February 26, 2006 @ 6:38 pm
I just did the WordPress upgrade (because I like living on the edge), and apart from a few seconds of heart failure, alleviated slightly by a couple of readers holding my hand via email, and a lightning response from my host (2 minutes to answer a query – this is a whole different world ;-)), we now seem to be all systems go again.
Right, I would now like to just write on this blog for a while and forget about servers and databases and suchlike.
Agreed?

American customer service at its best. Actually, as an American, I am a little shocked. Depending on where you are over here, customer service can either be bliss, or a horror show. Glad you’re getting the better end of the deal.
And yes, in the words of the late, great Graham Chapman, “Get on with it!, Well? Get on with it!”

Good luck with it. This is a nicely written site.
Comment by fjl — February 27, 2006 @ 3:51 am
yay! i can also attest that your new site loads MUCH faster than the old one.
Comment by franko — February 27, 2006 @ 4:59 pm
Congratulations on a smooth and successful upgrade! Not bad for someone who claims to have no technical knowledge or understanding! Let’s hope that this host meets expectations – the old host did seem to have A MENacingly slow server.
