upgrading hiccups

Filed under: misc — petiteanglaiseparis @ 9:41 pm

If you have eagle eyes you will note that this site has travelled back in time to approximately 1am Friday 17 February. This was due to a little glitch in my upgrade to the newest version of wordpress (which I didn’t need to have, but it has so many new features how could I not?) A tiny little problem that with my heavy handedness I managed to turn into a major fiasco, deleting my blogger posts from July to September in the process.

The good news is that it has been rescued and my old posts are back where they belong.

The bad news is that I need to fiddle a bit to make it look right, and I lost all your comments from today on the last 3 posts. Sorry about that. I might paste some of them back in again later, I saved them in a cunning word document and I especially liked the anonymous declaration from a ‘mystery admirer’. (I have your IP address anonymous, and I’ll track you down eventually!)

I will be tweaking a bit this weekend. I’ll try not to break anything this time, promise.

And thank you podz. I don’t know if you go around rescuing damsels in distress like this all the time, but in any case, this one is truly grateful!

As the main problem I was trying to solve involved comments, I’d be grateful if when you stop by this weekend you could drop me a line to show that you can! I can’t test this function myself, because as site admin I am treated differently to you mere mortals…!

  1. You have a marvelous blog here . . . as far as your writing is concerned, it’s like getting a one-page edition of the New Yorker every day! First thing I look for.

Wife and daughter are looking forward to our 10 days in the sixth this May; we’ll wave in your direction when we get there and being computer handicapped, we have to wait until we get home to read your posts.

  8. your site happens to be one of the rare ones where the comments are as great to read as your writings, so I’m glad everything seems to be back to normal. Hurrah!

  9. One of your local fans here:cool:. Glad to see you’re back. I missed your usual high granularity. (This is a term I heard on the phone over a year ago. Impressed, I added it to my own personal vocabulary and swore I’d slip it into a conversation at the earliest opportunity. I’ve been waiting ever since. OK this is not exactly a conversation but I used it anyhow. So that’s today’s little victory. Now let’s see how I perform at IKEA.

  15. phew! I think I’m sorted for now.

OK, I might now test the new option which means that comments are sent to moderation the first time you comment, and afterwards will always be accepted.

I’m going to go tick the box.

If you comment and nothing happens, bear with me, I’ll approve it as soon as I see it is there.

And then if you comment again, it should work automatically.

    Testing!

  16. I hate updating as well. having to do it so often one gets a feel for it and always have your data backed up. Glad it’s all worked out in the end…

  17. Petite’s approval… *sigh*

I hope this new feature works out for you. It is sad that internet trolls make such a thing required, but what can one do? I think the only way to avoid them is to say that you’re a 40-something guy and they’ll leave you totally alone.

  23. Hey there,

Can’t remember if I’ve commented here before so thought I’d risk it for the moderation thingy. Clearly senility is setting in already….

    Au revoir…

  25. Weeeeeeeeeee!!! Yay for 1.5!

I’m frightened of going up to 1.5 but it must be done soon!

*thumbs up* she ain’t a spammah!

    Comment by Véro — February 20, 2005 @ 8:13 pm

  26. Véro – I’m sure you will be fine. I followed the podz tutorial and it would all have been fine except that my wp-comments.php was quite old and not compatible with all the new functions in 1.5. So you may need to use one of the new comments.php files provided with 1.5 and tailor it to fit your template.

But as usual, the people on the support forum were fantastic, and the guy who helped me spent two hours sorting out my mess for free, long distance. What a star!

  28. Hi from Toronto Petite.

I came over from Real E Fun months ago (& have been lurking since) and must say I love your blog; extremely well-written and very funny.

I empathise with your nanny struggles – mine are 9 & 11 and I still have difficulties.

  29. If it were earlier, I could think of something clever myself.
How about something clever by somebody else?

    Of a mother’s neglects
May spoil her boy’s orientation to sex.
    But the converse is worse:
